520 |a Letter subcsribed and signed (in French) written to Louis XIII of France. Concerning French Huguenot War. A letter of great historical interest, expressing James I's satisfaction at the Peace which had been arranged with the Huguenots at Montpellier on the 19th October, 1612, and by which Louis XIII renewed to his Protestant subjects his promises of protection and pardon and the observance of the Edict of Nantes. The letter also refers to the proposals of mediation which James had offered earlier in the year, but which Louis had declined; and to the re-appointment of Lord Herbert of Cherbury as Ambassador at the Court of France. (Trans.) :- "... We ware greatly rejoiced to hear ... the good news and assurances of the Peace which it has pleased you to grant to your subjects of the Religion, for the sake of the great good which will result from it, and which you will experience throughout your kingdom, for we have always thought that the continuance or the war has only been of very great damage to it. And this has been the cause and the sole motive of the intervention we have made through Embassies and other means we have employed toward you to that end, to show you the sincerity of the affection which we have always had for your welfare" etc. (Kat. Geigy-Hagenbach)
